AutomationsUpdated
Webhooks
Start an automation when another app posts data to its webhook link, or add a Send a webhook step that calls another app when the automation runs.
Webhooks connect automations to other apps. The Webhook trigger lets another app start an automation. The Send a webhook step lets an automation call another app.
Before you start
- Webhooks need the Starter plan or higher. Workspaces on their trial can use them too.
- Only admins can edit automations.
Things to know
- On the Free plan, a call to a webhook link is refused with a message that the plan doesn't include workflow webhooks, and a Send a webhook step fails.
- Each webhook call is one run, and counts toward your plan's runs a month.
Start an automation from another app
- Go to More > Automations and open or create an automation.
- Click the trigger, then Change trigger type, and pick Webhook.
- Copy the Live URL. It includes a secret, so keep it private.
- Add the steps you want, then click Activate. The link works only while the automation is live.
- In the other app, send a POST request to the link with a JSON body.
Things to know about the call:
- The body must be JSON, up to 64 KB.
- Each value in the body becomes a variable your steps can use. In a step's field, click the variable button, choose Payload field… under Webhook payload, then type the value's name after
trigger.payload., such astrigger.payload.email. - The secret can go in the link, or in an
x-webhook-secretheader. - A wrong secret, or an automation that isn't live, is refused.
Call another app from an automation
- Open the automation.
- Click Add another step and pick Send a webhook under Connect.
- Enter the URL to call and pick the HTTP method: GET, POST, PUT, PATCH or DELETE.
- Click Add header for any headers the other app needs, such as a key.
- Under Body (JSON), write the body to send. Leave it empty to send the record that started the run.
The step fails if the other app doesn't answer within 5 seconds, returns an error, or redirects. A failed step marks the run as failed, and its reason shows on the Runs tab. Spodus doesn't call addresses on private networks.
