Team chat channels
Create a channel in Messages for a topic or a client, set what it's for, rename it, and mute, leave or archive it when you no longer need it.
A channel is a chat room in Messages for one topic, such as a client or a project. Every workspace starts with #general.
Things to know
- Everyone in the workspace can read and post in every channel.
- Channel names use lowercase letters, numbers and dashes. Spodus shows the name it will use as you type.
- The topic shows beside the channel name at the top of the channel.
- Muting and leaving affect only you. Archiving a channel hides it for everyone.
Create a channel
- In the left rail, click Messages.
- Hover over Channels in the sidebar and click New channel (the + icon).
- Type a Name.
- Optionally, fill in What it’s for. This becomes the channel's topic.
- Click Create channel.
Set or change the topic
- Open the channel.
- Click Conversation options (the ⋮ icon) at the top right.
- Click Edit topic.
- Type the topic and click Save topic.
To change the name, click Rename channel in the same menu, type the new name and click Rename.
Mute a channel
- Open the channel and click Conversation options (the ⋮ icon).
- Click Mute channel.
A muted channel is dimmed in your sidebar and shows a muted bell at the top. Click Unmute channel to undo it.
Leave a channel
- Click Conversation options (the ⋮ icon), then Leave channel.
- Confirm with Leave channel.
Nothing is deleted. The channel and its messages stay for everyone else. You stop seeing it in Messages, and you can't get back to it yourself.
Archive a channel
- Click Conversation options (the ⋮ icon).
- Click Archive channel.
The channel is hidden for everyone in the workspace. It happens right away, without a confirmation, and you can't unarchive it from the app.
