Milestones
Break a project into dated milestones, link tasks so progress rolls up, mark them done or missed, and turn a milestone into an invoice for its amount.
A milestone is a named date on a project, like "Design sign-off". Use milestones to break a project into stages, show the client where things stand, and bill a fixed fee in parts.
Things to know
- A milestone has a Name, Project, Phase, Due date, Owner, Status and Amount.
- Phase is Discovery, Design, Build, Review, Launch or Support.
- On the project's Overview, a milestone's status is Upcoming, Done or Missed.
- Tasks with a milestone set in their Milestone field count toward its progress.
- Create invoice needs the Revenue module.
Add a milestone
- Open the project's full page.
- On the Overview tab, in Milestones, click Add milestone (the + icon).
- Type the milestone name and pick a date.
- Click Add, or press Enter.
To fill in more, such as Phase, Owner or Amount, use New milestone on the project's Milestones tab instead. It opens the full form, already linked to the project.
Track progress
The Milestones tab lists the project's milestones by date, with a progress bar from their linked tasks. A milestone with no linked tasks shows No tasks.
When every linked task is closed and the milestone isn't done yet, click Complete on its row to mark it Done.
On the Overview, click a milestone's status to change it to Upcoming, Done or Missed, or click Remove to delete it. The Next milestone card shows the next one due.
Invoice a milestone
- Set the milestone's Amount.
- On the project's Overview, click the milestone's status.
- Click Create invoice.
A new invoice opens for the project's client, with one line at the milestone's amount. Check it and save it. Once it's billed, the milestone shows the invoice number, and the menu offers Open invoice instead.
On a Fixed fee project, the next milestone with an amount that hasn't been billed is also what Spodus offers to invoice when the project finishes. See Close out a project.
